In the immediate weeks

  • Keep something of theirs — a collar, a favourite toy — somewhere you'll see it. This is not being stuck; it is part of grieving.
  • Tell people about them. Say their name. Talk about what they were like. Naming them out loud keeps them present in a healthy way.
  • Mark the day of their death in your calendar for future years. Having a day set aside to remember them means you don't have to carry the anticipatory grief of the anniversary approaching without acknowledgement.
  • Write about them — a letter, a list, a memory. Getting it down creates a record and gives the grief somewhere to go.

Creating something lasting

  • A portrait — a drawn or painted version of a favourite photo. Something that holds their image intentionally, to display.
  • A photo book — a printed collection of photographs from their life. Can be made through online photo services and kept on a shelf.
  • A garden planting — a plant, tree, or bulb in their memory. Something that marks time and changes with the seasons.
  • A memory box — a contained, intentional collection of objects. A collar, a card, a printed photo, a piece of fur if you have it.
  • A small social media tribute — a post that names them and shares what they were. Public acknowledgement has value.

In the years that follow

Grief for a cat doesn't end on a schedule. Many people find that they remember their cats — specifically, individually — for years and decades. This is not something to outgrow; it is evidence of a real relationship.

  • Keep their photo somewhere visible, not just stored away.
  • Mention them by name to new people in your life who ask about them.
  • Light a candle on their anniversary.
  • Let yourself feel the grief when it arrives, even if it arrives unexpectedly.

The goal is not to let go. The goal is to carry them in a way that still leaves room for joy — and for other loves, including other cats, if and when that feels right.

A portrait of your cat — made from your own photo, with their name, in a gentle pencil style — is one thing that can stay on a shelf or a wall and hold their presence for as long as you want it to. We create them for £9:
